I have a confession to make: I sometimes judge a coffee shop by its cups. Not the disposable paper ones you grab in a rush, but the ceramics they trust you with when you decide to sit down. There’s something about the weight of a good cup that promises a great coffee experience. So, when I walked past Alchemist Funan and saw their sleek, branded ceramics resting against a backdrop of stainless steel and bold, geometric fashion, I knew I had to stop.
I visited on a Tuesday afternoon around 2pm, hoping to beat the post-lunch peak hours. Located on the ground floor of Funan Mall, Alchemist isn’t just a cafe; it’s a collaboration with the fashion label Arcade. While Funan Mall is home to several bakeries and cafes, Alchemist stands out for its unique blend of coffee and fashion. It’s an interesting concept—sipping espresso while eyeing a rack of minimalist clothing in a stylish retail space (I intend to just buy my usual coffee, but I ended up walking out with a bag of new clothes). It feels very “Funan 2.0,” blending lifestyle and utility in a way that feels effortlessly cool, if a little intimidating at first glance, though the room for seating is quite limited.
Practical Information: What You Need to Know Before You Visit
Price: Prices are standard for specialty coffee in Singapore. Beverages typically range from $4.00 to $8.50. It’s fair for the quality you’re getting. Like many cafes in Singapore, customers are encouraged to purchase food or drinks if they plan to stay for a while.
Location: Floor Level 1 of Funan (Just next to the PopMart store)
Booking: No reservations here. It’s strictly walk-in.
Timing: As I mentioned, weekday afternoons seem safe. If you come on a weekend, expect to wait for a seat or just plan on taking your coffee to go. Hours of operation are daily from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM or 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, depending on the source.
Pro-Tip: If the seating area is full, grab your coffee takeaway and head to the large communal steps in the Funan atrium or the rooftop garden. You might have better luck finding a spot there (Since the space there is huge). It’s a much more relaxed way to enjoy your drink without feeling like you’re hovering over someone to finish theirs.
The Coffee Bar Experience: Specialty Coffee and Tasting Notes of Alchemist Funan

Alchemist Funan offers a focused menu of specialty coffee, free from sugary blends. I tried the Dark Matter Blend Flat White ($6.00)—bold with roasted nut and deep chocolate hints, smooth and naturally sweet without added sugar. Perfect for someone who likes the feeling of drinking Black Coffee but not actually drinking one (Like me) Customizations include oat or soy milk and extra espresso shots for $1.00.
The Lumos Blend Iced White ($7.50) was bright and fruity, with berry and floral hints, refreshing yet balanced without acidity. They also offer Cascara Tea ($6.00) (Izzah’s favourite), brewed from coffee cherries, a light and fruity alternative.
Unlike traditional Singapore kopi, which is strong and smoky, Alchemist presents a modern specialty coffee experience blending heritage with contemporary trends.
Atmosphere and Interior Design: A Cool Space to Sip Specialty Coffee
The first thing that hits you is the interior design. It’s Bauhaus-inspired, which is just a fancy way of saying it’s all clean lines, bold colors, and functional beauty. The space is open, airy, and undeniably photogenic. If you’re looking for a backdrop for your next Instagram story, this is it.
But here’s the catch: it’s not exactly designed for lounging. The space is compact with just four or five small tables, designed for quick visits. I counted maybe four or five small seats along a bench near the window. It’s a “stop-and-go” kind of place, or a “perch-and-people-watch” spot if you’re lucky enough to snag a table. I managed to grab a spot near the counter, but I wouldn’t recommend coming here with a laptop hoping to bang out a few hours of work. There are very few power sockets available, and the vibe is transient, buzzing with shoppers and office workers grabbing their caffeine fix during busy shopping hours. Many work-friendly cafes in Singapore are located in the Central Business District and can get especially crowded on weekends, so keep that in mind if you plan a visit during the week.
Service and Wait Times: Expect Quality Over Speed

The service was professional, if a little brisk. The baristas were clearly busy—there was a steady stream of takeaway orders—but they remained friendly. I appreciated that the barista took a split second to explain the difference between the Dark Matter and Lumos blends when I hesitated at the register. Signature espresso-based drinks like the Dark Matter blend and Iced White are served with care and attention to detail. It wasn’t a long lecture, just a helpful nudge in the right direction.
However, be prepared to wait. Because they weigh their shots and take care with the milk, drinks are served only after careful preparation. My drinks took about 10 minutes to arrive even though the queue wasn’t huge. I’ve heard it can get up to 30-45 minutes during peak weekends, so patience is definitely a virtue here.
Final Verdict: A Specialty Coffee Shop Worth Visiting
Alchemist Funan is for the coffee purist who appreciates aesthetics as much as a good extraction. It’s not the place for a long, sprawling brunch or a noisy gathering with five friends. It’s a pit stop for quality coffee in a cool, minimalist space. While Alchemist Funan focuses on coffee, those looking for a wider variety of dishes can find plenty of options at nearby cafes, many of which are known for their signature dishes.
I’d recommend it to solo coffee drinkers, couples needing a quick recharge while shopping, or anyone who wants to impress a date with their knowledge of “cool, hidden-in-plain-sight” spots. The coffee is genuinely excellent, the vibe is modern, and honestly, holding that cup just makes you feel a little more stylish.
Just don’t bring your laptop, and maybe bring a jacket, the air conditioning from the mall can be pretty unforgiving if you’re sitting still. (Also make sure to bring in some extra cash, you just never know but you might find yourself buying something from their shop aside their coffee; like I did)
Rating: 4/5 stars ⭐ (-1 star because I spend more money than planned due to their clothing line)
