I used to think treats had to be earned properly.
Like I needed to finish a huge project, survive a terrible week, hit a goal, or do something impressive enough to justify buying myself a nice drink or dessert. A little cake after work had to come with a reason. A pretty matcha latte had to be attached to productivity. Even a simple pastry felt like something I should only get if I had been “good” enough that day.
But lately, I’ve been trying to unlearn that.
Because honestly, life is already tiring in small ways. Waking up early counts. Replying to emails counts. Getting through a crowded train ride counts. Doing your laundry, showing up for work, finishing one small task you kept delaying, those things count too. They may not look impressive to anyone else, but they still take effort.
And I think small effort deserves small joy.
That doesn’t mean rewarding ourselves for everything in a careless way. It doesn’t mean we stop working hard or treat every minor inconvenience like a crisis. But I think there’s something unhealthy about believing we only deserve nice things after pushing ourselves to the edge.
Sometimes, a sweet treat is not a reward for achievement. Sometimes, it’s just a reminder that we are allowed to enjoy our own life while we’re still in the middle of figuring it out.

I like the idea of stopping by a café after an ordinary day and ordering something that makes me happy. Maybe it’s a slice of cake, a fruit tea, a croissant, or an iced chocolate that tastes like childhood. Nothing dramatic. Nothing expensive. Just a little moment that says, “You made it through today.”
There’s comfort in that.
Food has always been tied to celebration, but not every celebration has to be big. Some days, the win is simply not giving up. Some days, the win is choosing to be gentle with yourself instead of waiting until you’re completely exhausted to rest.
I think we forget that joy doesn’t need a grand occasion. A simple day can still be worth marking. A small achievement can still be worth noticing. And a sweet treat can be a quiet way of telling yourself that your effort matters, even when nobody else sees it.
So yes, I do believe you deserve the little cake. The drink you’ve been craving. The dessert you keep saving in your camera roll. Not because you did something huge, but because you’re here, trying, showing up, and making it through.
That is enough sometimes. And now that I finished writing this article, I believe I deserve a little sweet treat too 😉
